If you're moving to Phoenix with kids, you probably want to know the best school districts in Phoenix, Arizona before you even start touring homes. With so many family-friendly suburbs, great weather, and plenty of room to run, jump, and play, families from all over the country move to the Valley every year.

So what are the best schools in the area, and how do you find the right one from afar? We've done the legwork for you - here's what the data actually says right now, plus a few things about Arizona's school system that most guides like this one leave out.

You may have heard Phoenix has great schools, and that's largely true. But here's the twist: as of the 2025-26 school year, Arizona's public education system is still ranked dead last in the country for the second year running, driven mostly by school funding, which ranks 49th nationally.

So how can the lowest-ranked state also have some genuinely excellent schools? Two big reasons. First, funding concentrates where the people are. Roughly 4.1 million of Arizona's 6.9 million residents live in Maricopa County alone, more than half the state in one county, so a much bigger share of the state's education dollars ends up funding schools in the Phoenix metro area than in Arizona's rural areas, which drag down the statewide average.

Second, Arizona has one of the largest charter school sectors in the country, and it shows. One more thing worth knowing before you pick a neighborhood based on school zoning alone: since 2022, Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program has been open to every K-12 student in the state, regardless of income or which district you're zoned for. As of early 2026, more than 100,000 Arizona students, about 1 in 10, are using an ESA worth $7,000 to $32,000 a year to help cover private school tuition, tutoring, homeschool curriculum, or microschools.

Ranked #3 in the Phoenix area with a Niche grade of A, 28 schools, and about 20,700 students. Just know the cost of living in this area runs higher than most other suburbs.

Gilbert Public Schools - Gilbert Public Schools
Ranked #5 in the Phoenix area with a Niche grade of A, 38 schools, and over 31,000 students. Known for strong teachers and a relatively affordable cost of living, with the area continuing to grow quickly.

Ranked #6 in the Phoenix area with a Niche grade of A, 45 schools, and over 26,000 students. Home values here run higher than most on this list, but if top-tier schools are your priority, it's hard to beat.

Deer Valley Unified School District - Deer Valley Unified School District
