North Scottsdale

North Scottsdale is the broad, upscale swath of the city that stretches from the Loop 101 corridor out toward the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and it is where much of Scottsdale's reputation for golf, resorts, and desert luxury living actually lives. The area covers a collection of well-known master-planned communities, including DC Ranch, Grayhawk, Troon North, and McDowell Mountain Ranch, each with its own character but sharing the same emphasis on desert-contemporary architecture, mountain views, and access to championship golf.

Golf is genuinely central to life here. TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course hosts the WM Phoenix Open every winter, and dozens of other courses, both private and semi-private, are woven through the neighborhoods. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, one of the largest urban preserves in the country, borders much of North Scottsdale and gives residents direct trailhead access for hiking and mountain biking without leaving the neighborhood.

Housing stock ranges widely, from attached townhomes and villas in golf communities to sprawling custom estates on the edges of the preserve. Grayhawk and DC Ranch tend to be more family-oriented with strong HOA amenities like community centers and pools, while areas closer to the preserve edge lean toward larger, more private lots. The Mayo Clinic's Scottsdale campus anchors the area medically, and the shopping and dining at Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter are a short drive south.

Schools feed into the well-regarded Scottsdale Unified and Cave Creek Unified districts, and the area's newer infrastructure means wide roads, modern schools, and plenty of parks. What North Scottsdale does not offer is the walkable, historic charm of Old Town - this is a car-dependent, suburban-luxury environment built around golf carts and trailheads rather than sidewalks and storefronts.

Bottom line: North Scottsdale suits buyers who want resort-style amenities, golf, and preserve access baked into daily life, with the tradeoff being distance from the nightlife and walkability of Old Town.
